7 ways to prioritize your sleep health in 2020

Once the holiday season is over and the “YOLO” mood goes out the window, it seems that sleep is once more on the top of people’s agenda. 

According to at-home lab testing company Everlywell, Google searches for “trouble sleeping” and “how to sleep better” tend to reach an all-time yearly high between Dec. 30 and Jan. 12.

The National Sleep Foundation reports that sleep needs vary depending on lifestyle factors, although adults between the ages of 18 and 64 would benefit the most from clocking seven to nine hours of restful pillow time every night.

While that might sound like an idealistic amount of time to spend catching Zs, it’s important to remember just how vital sleep is to overall health. Most worryingly, depriving your body of sleep can seriously impact your immune system, leaving you more susceptible to the flu and other viruses this winter.  

If you don’t know where to begin, The National Sleep Foundation recommends these tried-and-true tips: 

  • Stick to a sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual.
  • Exercise daily.
  • Evaluate your bedroom to ensure ideal temperature, sound and light.
  • Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.
  • Beware of hidden sleep stealers, like alcohol and caffeine.
  • Turn off electronics before bed.
