Coach in trouble after letting ‘twerk tour’ film in school gym

A high school basketball coach in Miami, Fla., is in trouble with school officials after he allowed a celebrity twerker to use the high school gym for a “twerk tour” video.

Nastya Nass, a fitness influencer and self-described “twerk icon” with 6.9 million followers on Instagram brought 47 dancers to the shoot to perform for her newest video. Nass had been advertising her “twerk tour” on Instagram — a series of stops all around the country where she would film twerking videos.

The video Nass filmed in the Miami Beach Senior High gym was uploaded to YouTube on Feb. 28 and has more than 151,000 views. A social clip of the video was posted on Instagram and amassed over 3.4 million views.

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools district has an issue with the video being filmed in the gym. While Nass did not tag the high school specifically, the school’s colors and banners are visible in the background of the dancing — making it easy to identify.

Jacob Shaw, the school’s basketball coach, was the point person for Nass and her crew and allowed everyone into the gym to film. There were no students present at the time of filming, but district spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez-Diego told the Miami Herald that if the video was used for promotional purposes in any way, there could be legal repercussions.

Shaw has since been reassigned and is under investigation by the Office of Professional Standards. It was the principal, Maria Rodriguez, who reported the incident to the district’s office the Monday after Nass filmed.
