Grocery store cashier lauded for kind act

A Tennessee teenager is being praised for a selfless act after noticing a senior needed help at a grocery store, WBIR reports.

While assisting Layne McKeel, 17-year-old Elizabeth Taylor, a cashier at Fresh N Low in Georgetown, noticed that the customer couldn’t come up with enough money to pay for his groceries. The senior had reportedly carted about $170 worth of items.

“When she said it was $173.00, I said, ‘Oh no,’ and I pulled my wallet out and I only had $140,” McKeel, who had just received his disability check, recalled.

The senior had also apparently just missed the store’s senior discount hours when he realized he didn’t have enough money in his wallet. He said he offered to put some of the items back — until Taylor did the unexpected.

“It was all essential stuff so I was just like you know, and he was like what do I owe you? And I was like no, it’s fine, I’ll take care of it, it’s okay,” she said.

The teenager told WBIR she was just doing her part to help someone amid a global health crisis.

“We’ve seen a lot of older people, and they’re all trying to buy groceries and a lot of places have ran out of stuff, and so the older people are kind of taking the downfall for that,” she added. “I just try to give back when I can.”

McKeel said the teenager’s kind act brightened his day.

“She’s just a little angel is what she was,” he said. “You know, just the light of day.”
