Instagram and YouTube influencers have popularized the full-face beat, but there’s something about a no-makeup makeup look that feels refreshing, right? While I’m someone who wants others to see my makeup when I put it on, I can completely understand the allure of adding just enough product that it *looks* like your natural skin while covering up blemishes.
You may have heard of tinted moisturizers before — and if you haven’t, they are an amazing option if you’re looking for that barely-there-but-still-there look. Tinted moisturizers are just as their name suggests: a facial moisturizer that’s also slightly tinted with makeup pigments, giving you both moisture and makeup in one product.
How buildable is a tinted moisturizer? Though you may be able to brighten under your eyes or even give your skin an evened canvas with the product, those pesky dark spots, age spots or serious hyperpigmentation may be better left to a foundation. Remember: The tinted moisturizer is predominately for hydration, not color.
If you have oily skin, look for an oil-free tinted moisturizer, suggest the beauty experts at L’Oréal Paris. They also add that if you have dry skin, you should look for a tinted moisturizer that has extra nourishing ingredients in its formula.
Below, we’ve rounded up a few options if you’re looking to switch to a more natural look.
Shop: Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation, $30.10 (Orig. $43)
What it does: This foundation is great for those who are looking for protection from UV rays and pollution (which still can affect our skin even if we’re indoors) as well as a light-to-medium coverage on the skin. Packed with SPF 30 as well as antioxidants and red fruit extracts including watermelon, lychee seed and apple, the formula is hydrating and moisturizing.
What it does: According to bareMinerals, this tinted gel increases skin hydration in just one week. Mineral electrolytes help replenish thirsty skin while marine botanicals boost hydration. Heart-leaf globe daisy — an antioxidant — also helps protect against environmental stressors.
Shop: Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer, $46
What it does: Great for those with oily skin, this lightweight formula helps control oil breakthrough while also offering a slight tinge of color. Not only does it offer broad-spectrum SPF 20 UVA/UVB protection, but antioxidant vitamins C and E also help protect skin from the damaging effects of the environment.
Shop: NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, $45
What it does: Definitely one of my favorites, this oil-free formula helps to physically reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots in just four weeks. It’s infused with botanicals and ingredients to immediately help thirsty skin feel hydrated. Two ingredients in its formula? Kopara from French Polynesia and mineral-rich seawater, both of which help revive and remineralize skin for a softer, smoother and brighter natural glow.
Shop: Tarte Maracuja Tinted Hydrator, $29
What it does: This buildable-coverage hydrator helps even out skin tone and minimizes the appearance of minor imperfections for a smoother, more hydrated look. Great for those who are looking for more of a naturally radiant and dewy finish, this product is packed with skin goodies such as maracuja oil, hyaluronic acid, vegan collagen, turmeric and aloe.
What it does: This tinted moisturizer offers a soft-matte finish with sheer coverage that is just enough to dull the look of redness and even out skin tone. On the site, Sephora also notes that due to the sheer pigments in this formula, the shade range works for a wide variety of skin tones.
Shop: IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream, $39.50
What it does: Although it’s not a tinted moisturizer, a CC cream can give you more of a full coverage build while still hydrating the skin. And not only is it full coverage, but it also has SPF 50+ physical sunscreen and is, according to the site, a “brightening color corrector, hydrating serum, poreless-finish primer, dark spot concealer and moisturizing day cream all in one!”
