Cutting edge suit could be the future of nightlife while social distancing

The typical concert experience is on hold for the foreseeable future.

The Covid-19 outbreak means mass gatherings are a threat to public health. But rather than giving up on the future of live events, the Los Angeles-based creative studio Production Club is redefining what those experiences may look like.

Production Club specializes in immersive music, tech and gaming experiences. Now, it has come up with Micrashell, a futuristic suit that concertgoers can wear to live shows while staying socially responsible.

The virus-shielded, hazmat-inspired protective gear allows people to interact in close proximity. It’s made of tactical, high-performance cut-resistant fabric that’s durable and easy to disinfect.

“The principle designing the suit was, knowing this is a time-sensitive matter, let’s not pack it with sci-fi features that don’t yet exist and will be roadblocks, but [let’s] use technologies that are available to us,” Miguel Risueños, Production Club’s head of invention, told Fast Company. “If we don’t do that, we’re just navel-gazing instead of actually trying to solve a problem.”

The features may not be brand new but they do teeter on the surreal. The Micrashell has an air filtration and breathing system comparable to N95 filters. Smartphones can seamlessly integrate with the suit control via an app. It even has a proximity-based wireless voice communication system that allows wearers to select who they want to speak to.

Most importantly, Micrashell is custom-made for entertainment experiences and it shows — the suit is drink and vape-friendly. Users can consume without removing the helmet due to its canister supply system. Plus, audience members can directly stream live audio into the Micrashell sound system during concerts or performances.

It also comes with a customizable camera and lighting system. Not to mention, a few optional fashion accessories like an NFC pouch and attachable stash pockets.
