If you’ve ever suffered from an itchy scalp, you know how annoying it can be. For a lot of people, it’s the unbearable side effect of dandruff or a sign of an inflammatory skin condition.

Either way, the itchiness you feel could indicate there’s something off in your scalp’s ecosystem.

“An itchy scalp basically signifies an imbalance of the scalp,” a certified trichologist, Guy Parsons told Harper’s Bazaar. “Normally, itchiness will be due to bacteria caused by sweat, sebum and pollution remaining on the scalp which then, in effect, attacks the scalp and causes itchiness.”

However, there is a solution to help give you some relief. For many shoppers, that solution is the Neutrogena T/Gel Extra Strength Therapeutic Shampoo. Specifically, this shampoo provides “redness and scalp itch relief caused by chronic scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and common dandruff,” according to the product description.

Unlike other anti-dandruff treatment shampoos, this one contains coal tar. It’s an ingredient that can effectively treat itching and scalp psoriasis, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. Additionally, its Neutar Technology helps slow down how fast your cells die and flake off.

Not to mention, this shampoo is great for daily use and claims to yield quick results — which many reviewers can attest to. One shopper said it “eliminated” their dry and itchy scalp “after using for a week.”

Another buyer raved that the product help her husband’s irritated and itchy scalp “go away” shortly after using.

“This works wonders for my husband’s hair! Poor thing was so itchy and irritated, and had fingernail-sized flakes falling from his scalp and beard out of nowhere. Nothing we tried worked for nearly 3 months. This product made it all go away within just a few days.”

Although many buyers gave the shampoo high marks, many reviewers griped about the shampoo’s “bitter” scent.

“Boy, is this a great product, but the scent of that charcoal is pretty gross,” one shopper wrote. “Fortunately, it’ll be gone about 30 mins after your shower, but it really is a bitter smell. However, the smell is not what is important. This stuff works amazingly.”
