Right now, many people are struggling to care for their beards while at home. While some people have simply adopted their normal wash routine to other parts of their body, the reality is your beard hair requires a different type of TLC from your head hair.
Other than visibly seeing the difference, your beard hair and hair on your head differ from a scientific perspective. According to Business Insider, beard hair belongs to a type of hair called “androgenic hair,” which has three different growth phases at different speeds. Much of this hair sprouts during and after puberty thanks to changes in the levels of androgen hormones.
The follicles of beard hair are very similar to the hair on a man’s groin and armpits, Dr. Bobby Buka, founder of Greenwich Village Dermatology and section chief at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, told HuffPost. “The concentration of sebaceous glands is high in several areas,” he said. “So the hair characteristics in those areas are very similar, in terms of thickness of shaft and quality of hair.”
Okay, so what does any of this mean?
Essentially, your beard hair has its own set of unique needs and wants, and when it comes down to wash day, there is no exception. That’s why I was so interested to learn about Billy Jealousy’s Beard Control Leave-In Conditioner, which was Amazon’s Choice for “beard control” and has a 4.4-out of 5 star rating.
According to its product description, this beard control delivers a “deliciously light hold while giving you the best of both worlds: a natural look with just a smidgen of definition.”
For those with thicker, fuller beards who are worried about product buildup, don’t fret. This product’s light hold means that you won’t have any product residue, and with ingredients like aloe leaf juice and jojoba seed oil, the conditioner softens and hydrates the beard and skin while stimulating, conditioning and adding shine.
The beard control also has a “woodsy and fresh fragrance with lavender, tropical fruit, sandalwood and oak moss notes,” according to the site. So yes, even your scruffy beard can look, feel and smell amazing.
Shoppers have raved about the product and its amazing effects on their beard. “I apply about a quarter size or less and rub it into my beard and mustache, and comb to style it. Takes about five minutes to dry, then it holds in place all day,” wrote one reviewer. They did also mention that playing around with the amount you use is important, but that it wasn’t a deal-breaker for them.
Another customer noted that they hadn’t had “any beard flakes” since they started using the product, something that “has always been a problem in the past.”
Consumers who didn’t like the product overall noted that the product was too light for them instead of having a stronger hold or thicker consistency. However, this product is more for a light hold so if you’re looking for something a bit stronger, you may want to snag something else.
