Staying silent about racial inequality isn’t an option for brands anymore. As protests continue globally in the name of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmad Ahrbury and the Black Lives Matter movement, some brands are speaking out and supporting the cause.

Now more than ever, people are looking for their go-to brands to show up for Black people and show solidarity. Smaller beauty brands, like Inn Beauty Project, have donated to causes like the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, George Floyd Memorial Fund and The Minnesota Freedom Fund. Other popular brand names, like Hero Cosmetics, are donating 100 percent of proceeds from its latest Mighty Patch Micropoint for Dark Spots for the week of June 1 to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund charity.

But the support doesn’t stop with skincare. Fashion brands, like Peter Do, are spending the month of June committing 100 percent of net profits from online sales to Black-founded organizations fighting for Black equality. Plus, Ugg is donating $50,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

While it’s important to have brands show up for Black lives, donations aren’t where the work ends. Many brands still need to work internally to truly champion Black success and equality. To support brands doing the work to uplift the Black community, check out these brands committing to the cause.

To our Mented community, We want to be honest about something. In times like these – times when our world is in crisis and our community is heartbroken – carrying on with our day-to-day operations can feel like a Herculean task. As founders we love what we do; we love that we get to do it, but there are days when selling another lipstick feels like the smallest, least important thing we can do in the midst of this chaos. Last week we witnessed George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police who are sworn to protect and serve; this was on the heels of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder, which was on the heels of Breonna Taylor’s. While makeup can often be a solace, there’s not enough gloss in the world to ease the pain we feel. The truth is, despite our pain, work must go on. But that doesn’t mean it’s business as usual. For the month of June, we’ll be donating a portion of every sale to support protestors around the country, starting with bail funds in New York City. We’re also giving our team every Friday this month off to promote mental health and give them the space to digest, reflect, and act. Finally, we will be hosting a completely free masterclass on starting an e-commerce business on Thursday, June 18th at 3 pm ET. Building a company that empowers and employs people of color all over the world has been one of our greatest joys, and in many ways, it’s our daily form of protest. We would love to share our insights and help as many of you as possible; you can register for the class via our story. Like so many of you, we are struggling to make sense of this time. We are grateful to be doing our small part to help our community, and we are grateful to you for being a part of it. With love, KJ and Amanda
