Here’s how to make the beignets from Disney’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’

Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” is a classic tale set in New Orleans and is rich with Louisiana’s unique blend of French and Black culture. Anyone who has watched the film probably vividly remembers Princess Tiana’s beignet scene. In it, main character Tiana whips up the treat made of fried dough and powdered sugar. She even puts her own twist on the classic by drizzling it with honey.

Since the film debuted, numerous copycat recipes have cropped up on the internet. Disney even sold a Princess Tiana cookbook for a time.

Now, Melanie, who goes by xo_melanieeeeee on TikTok, has created her own recipe and it looks very easy to follow.

Melanie mixed flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, milk, an egg and vanilla extract in a bowl. She then blended the ingredients together with a hand mixer to create the dough. After rolling the dough flat, she cut it into tiny squares. Next, Melanie deep fried the beignets and then topped the fried squares with powdered sugar. You’ll want to add a little honey to make these more like Princess Tiana’s.

The Disney fan even provided the measurements for her recipe in the comments.

“2 3/4 cups of flour, 1/3 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, a 1/2 teaspoon of salt and cinnamon, 1 cup of milk, 1 egg and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla,” she said

Beignets are the official doughnut of Louisiana. French settlers first brought them to the Americas when they migrated to Canada in the 17th century. When the British forced them to migrate south 100 years later, their descendants in Louisiana became who we call Cajuns today. The treat is still a staple at the famous Café Du Monde today.
