Special effects makeup artist David Harris combines the crude and gruesome with his cheeky sense of humor. Harris creates the illusion of injuries, maims and freak accidents with prosthetics.
His transformations are not for the faint of heart, but often generate millions of views on Instagram and TikTok. For one video, which racked up 3 million views, Harris uses prosthetic skin to make his mouth look like its sealed shut. Then, he uses a tool to cut it open. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
In another video — this time with 5 million views — Harris fake amputates a finger. To complete the illusion, he first manicures all of his fingers with red nail polish. Then he whips out a regular pair of scissors.
“Don’t be shy, cut some more. Don’t be shy, cut some more,” he says.
Harris then cuts the prosthetic pinky finger completely off. He reveals it’s a fake by flicking his real pinky finger up.
His most popular clip involves a similar setup, this time with a fake pinky toe.
“1-2-3-4-5-6,” he says as he grazes each toe with a small knife. “I don’t need you.” Then he cuts off the fake extra toe.
The video received over 30.7 million views. Many TikTok users were convinced the toe was real, a testament to Harris’ impressive skills.
“I thought it was real. Omg,” one user wrote.
“That really upset me for a second,” one person wrote with a laughing emoji.
Harris responded to the popularity of the video in the comment sections.
“Thank you for all the love guys,” he wrote. “It’s so humble to be appreciated! So thank you, everyone, you’re all insane.”
