Teenager sparks debate after tricking her sister into a ‘silly’ haircut

A 19-year-old is sparking a major online debate after sharing the way she tricked her “copycat” younger sister.

The teenager, writing under the username 8937apple, shared the conflict in Reddit’s AITA (Am I The A******) forum. Her post outlined the steps she took to stop her 16-year-old sister from imitating her life decisions.

Those steps included “tricking” her sister into getting a dramatic new haircut. The move ultimately launched their family into a huge argument.

‘It’s annoying and creeps me out’

The 19-year-old wrote that her sister has “copied” her for years — so much, in fact, that they’re often mistaken for twins.

We have same height, same skin tone, similar voice even,” the teen wrote, “She also has a habit of being a copycat, from [her] way of dressing to hobbies, even piercings.”

The teen said that her sister’s habit might be “cute” to outsiders, but within their family, it’s a different story. The Redditor added that she’s asked her sister to stop copying her several times.

“Honestly though, it’s annoying and creeps me out sometimes, like yeah, we are quite close too but why does she always happen to pick up everything I pick up??” she wrote.

‘She was furious’

One day, the 19-year-old planned some payback. She found an old wig, put it on and snapped an Instagram photo. According to the post, it was a “brown and pink wig” that “looks like a mushroom.”

She then got a text from her sister, asking if she’d really changed her hair. Instead of telling the truth, she decided to test the 16-year-old.

“While I somewhat [had] a feeling that she MIGHT copy that too, I lied and replied yes, I want a change of style,” the Redditor wrote.

When the teen visited her parents that weekend, she saw her younger sister. As expected, she’d cut her hair to look like the wig — thinking she was copying her big sister’s new hairstyle.

“[My sister] was very surprised that I arrived with my hair still long, then realized that I lied to her,” the Redditor wrote. “She was furious that she had to cut that silly hairstyle because she thought I had it, but truth be told, I never asked her to.”

‘A really bad joke’

The situation got more dramatic when the Redditor’s parents got involved. They called the stunt “a really bad joke,” and asked the teen to cut her hair so her younger sister would feel better.

The 19-year-old refused though, and wrote that she did feel guilty. However, she was happy she’d sent a message.

“While I feel sorry for her, I am somewhat glad that at least she won’t be able to copy my hairstyle now with her hair so short so I am keeping my hair long,” the teen wrote.

Reddit users largely took the older sister’s side. Many called the younger sister’s behavior “concerning,” and said the parents were enabling her.

“Don’t the parents know, ‘If she jumped off a cliff, would you?'” one user wrote.

“The parents should have nipped this in the bud a long time ago, and encouraged the younger sister to develop her own identity and sense of self,” another added.
