Working from home has its luxuries and benefits — there are no commuter costs, lunch fees are out the window and, if you choose, you can be productive from the comfort of your couch. However, for those whose careers involve staring at computer screens all day, eye strain is a leading side effect of this practice.

According to Healthline, “The amount of time you spend staring at a computer screen can affect your eyes and worsen dry eye symptoms.” Furthermore, they highlighted “activities that demand intense concentration can result in eye strain and dryness.”

So what exactly causes this constant eye dryness? While you may have been self-appeasing and internally convincing yourself that it may just be allergies, it appears that there’s much more to the story.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics performed a study and found that the average person blinks “up to 66 percent less frequently while using a computer.”

As Healthline further details, blinking is essential, especially during constant hours of computer use, because “it helps spread hydrating substances like tears and mucus across your eyes.” Therefore, if you’re blinking less frequently, “the tears on your eyes have more time to evaporate,” resulting in redness, dryness and irritation.

To remedy this strain, the publication recommends a few things. Among them are purchasing special glasses, preferably ones that block blue light (emitted from computer screens), using lubricating eye drops, adding an anti-reflective filter for computer screens and placing a humidifier near your work station to increase the amount of moisture in the air.

To make sure you have everything you need to combat computer eye strain, we’ve listed a few products that fit the previously mentioned criteria.
