The search for responsibly-made, low waste products can be difficult. To find truly sustainable gems, you have to sort through a lot of greenwashing and misleading claims to find actually eco-friendly products. But, as it turns out, it doesn’t have to be a perilous search after all.
E-retailer Made Trade does a good bulk of the sorting work for you, selling fair trade and sustainable home decor, clothing and pretty much any other “department store essential.” The site offers everything from throw blankets to athlesiure and cookware to shelving. It’s truly a collection as vast as your top department store, giving you consciously made versions of all your go-to home items.
“You can basically think of Made Trade as a sustainable version of Nordstrom,” sustainable lifestyle YouTuber Shelbizleee says in a recent video on her channel. And the comparison is pretty spot-on.
Made Trade also makes it easy to shop by your values, providing seven product categories goods can be classified under. This includes categories for sustainable products, vegan products and products made by people of color, among others.
Some “heritage” items are even made by artisans in developing nations who work to keep their traditional art forms alive. While many home stores may sell similar items mass-produced at a lower price, buying from Made Trade ensures your purchase is supporting the cultural community that actually originated the art. These include communities creating weaved baskets and bowls, or even jewelry artisans.
The Made Trade website reads, “You can shop freely, knowing each piece has been responsibly sourced and expertly handcrafted with sustainable materials. And that the makers and artisans were paid fair wages.”
It’s easy to spend hours on Made Trade compiling a cart of eco-friendly items. But to save you some time and searching, here are some products from the site not to be missed.
