The Royal Family is using Zoom to check in with the public

The Royal Family is using Zoom in creative ways and yes, that includes Queen Elizabeth II. The 94-year-old has always addressed the public via radio, written statements and televised speeches. But somehow a Zoom from the Queen feels a bit more personal.

Her first publicized Zoom was to a group of caretakers for Carers Week 2020 in June. Her Majesty spoke from Windsor Castle to four carers. They chatted about their work looking after sick, disabled and senior members of their families and communities.

“It’s interesting listening to all your tales,” she said. “I’m very impressed by what you have achieved already. I’m very glad to have been able to join you today.”

Meanwhile, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, used Zoom to surprise Bond Primary School tennis players with a video call from Sir Andy Murray. The decorated tennis pro and Wimbledon Champion wanted to do something nice for the kids who missed their final week of championships. Murray reminded the kids to stay active during the confusing time.

“I was going out on my road bike which was something I’ve never done before,” Murray said. “It’s quite important in these times to stay as active as you can because it’s good for the mind.”

To raise awareness about mental health the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, met with athletes David Beckham, Steph Houghton and Tyrone Mings. The conversation was a part of his Mentally Healthy Football Declaration, which was signed by leaders in the sports community. The effort is to bring a greater understanding of mental health in soccer.

“I really hope that you guys feel that the tide is turning on mental health and we are making progress,” William told the athletes

The royal family also engaged in a few more lighthearted activities like hosting bingo with seniors, celebrating Ramadan and even Canada Day.
