An often-overlooked demographic when it comes to the face mask discussion are those in the Deaf community. While conversations surrounding face masks (like what type you should buy, where you should buy them, states enforcing wearing face masks and the level of risk when not enforced) are valid, very few take into account that the wearing of traditional face masks impedes on Deaf and hard of hearing communities’ ability to read lips and expressions.

While face masks serve as essential barriers to inhibit the spread of Covid-19, they’ve also become communication barriers for the 48 million Americans who are deaf or hard of hearing. Growing up in a household with a mother who is predominately deaf in both ears, and as someone who is hard of hearing herself, I’ve always understood the importance of visible forms of communication. That’s why I was beyond excited when I found these clear face masks on Amazon.

With a viewing window over the mouth area, these masks are perfect for lip reading and expressions. And these masks aren’t just essential for those in the Deaf community, either. I mean, think about it — how many times have you had to pull your face mask down so someone else could understand what you were saying?

For vanity purposes, these masks can also be perfect if you just want to show off your favorite lipstick or award-winning smile. Personally, I love how you can get them in an assortment of colors, making them not only effective but chic as well.

Although there are not a lot of ratings for these clear face masks, the few they do have all praise the masks for its affordable price point, effectiveness, design and comfortability.

“Fast delivery and it’s not stuffy but still protective. It fits the face,” wrote one reviewer.

Consider these face masks if you’re looking to stock up. They not only help make a more equitable experience for all during this time but also put a new spin on the face masks we’ve all come to embrace.
