TikTok’s ‘lawyer mom’ shares powerful advice for students dealing with police on campus

A lawyer on TikTok is going viral with her powerful set of lessons for college students.

The TikToker, who goes by the nickname “Lawyer Mom” online, shared her advice in a video that now has more than 1.7 million views. Her clip, put simply, advises students on what to do when they’re confronted by police at school.

Lawyer Mom, who’s real first name is Susu, begins her video by reminding students to always stay “calm, cool and collected,” when they encounter an officer. She then emphasizes the right to remain silent, and adds that students can refuse when an officer asks to search their phone.

“It’s possible the officer will still search you even though you don’t give consent,” she adds. “But it will protect your rights if you end up in court.”

The video was widely praised on TikTok, with commenters applauding her ability to simplify complex and possibly frightening legal situations. That’s something the lawyer has become an expert at over the past few months.

Speaking to In The Know, Susu explained that she started the Lawyer Mom account back in May — and now has more than 430,000 followers. At first, the idea seemed like a tall order.

“I was a little hesitant because it’s so hard to explain the law under ONE minute, people are also from all over the U.S. and state laws vary from state to state,” she said in an email. “But I decided to give it a try, at least to engage people and start a conversation about various legal issues.”

That decision has certainly paid off. Susu has now created dozens of popular videos explaining the law to young people — from phone security and privacy laws to advice for students who want to become lawyers.

Susu’s video on college students and police, meanwhile, was a personal one. The lawyer told In The Know that she was inspired by her younger sister, who is currently in high school.

“I feel that many young students are unaware of their legal rights/protections,” she said. “School officials also tend to ignore them. Students’ privacy rights are violated over minor offenses.”

It’s clear her advice had an impact. Many Tiktokers took to Susu’s comments to thank her for the help.

“I wish you were my mom,” one wrote. “I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you.”

“Best mom ever,” another added.
