As someone who loves to cook, my biggest issue with traditional cookbooks is that the recipes usually make four to six servings. Living alone, that means that I have to a) scale the recipes down, b) have half of my meal go to waste or c) have to eat the same dish at least four times in a week.

Luckily, there are cookbooks that feature recipes with two servings only so you can save time, money and and your taste buds. If you live alone, that means you get an extra portion for a lazy day. But if you’re cooking for a couple, it’s just the right amount.

From Instant Pot recipes to heart-healthy recipes to one-pan recipes, these cookbooks have something for everyone’s personal preferences and dietary needs.

1. “The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook” by America’s Test Kitchen, $25.49 (Orig. $40)

Credit: Amazon

Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars

This cookbook doesn’t only scale back complicated recipes, but provides recommendations for cuts of meat that are smaller by nature and perfect for two servings. It’s a great gift for newlyweds, college students, empty nesters and more.

“I have a feeling this book is going to become my newest obsession for inspiration. There aren’t pictures for every single recipe, but that would make this a very big book — there are over 650 recipes! There are plenty of mouthwatering photos, so I am not disappointed at all. There are also great ‘how-to’ tips that any cook would find helpful,” – Foodiewife, Amazon reviewer

2. “The Ultimate Instant Pot Cookbook for Two: Perfectly Portioned Recipes for 3-Quart and 6-Quart Models” by Janet A. Zimmerman, $8.79 (Orig. $16.99)

Credit: Amazon

Rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars

The problem with scaling down an Instant Pot recipe is that it requires a serious strategy. You never know how cutting down a recipe will affect the cooking time, and it’s harder to check on your food in a sealed Instant Pot than the oven. However, this cookbook does the work for you with recipes for comfort foods like stews and pot roasts for two, but also lighter options like pork tacos with pineapple salsa. The book caters to several Instant Pot sizes and versions, and is even verified by the cookware brand.

“So far everything I’ve tried has come out great. Healthier than most Instant Pot cookbook recipes. Great variety. Not so many roasts and meat recipes, but that’s part of the health factor I suppose,” – Chili Dawg, Amazon reviewer

3. “Healthy Cookbook for Two: 175 Simple, Delicious Recipes to Enjoy Cooking for Two” by Michelle Anderson, $9.29 (Orig. $17.99)

Credit: Amazon

Rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars

“Healthy” can mean something different to everyone, whether it means high in nutrients, low in calories or meat and dairy-free. This healthy cookbook specifically looks at portion sizes with recipes that will make you feel full and feel good, like curried chicken couscous or sweet potato pancakes. The book has 175 recipes and a guide to shopping and meal planning for the week so you can waste less food, yet not have to make multiple trips to the grocery store.

“I love this cookbook. It is just my husband and me now, as the kids are grown and out of the house. We have tried several recipes in this book and all have been delicious. Plus very little, if any, leftovers. I used to make such large quantities and then we would ‘eat on it’ for days — and I would usually end up throwing it out. These recipes are easy, economical and delicious. Thank you for a cookbook like this.” — Amazon customer and reviewer

4. “5-Ingredient Cooking for Two: 100 Recipes Portioned for Pairs” by Robin Donovan, $15.29 (Orig. $16.99)

Credit: Amazon

Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars

This book helps you save money and time cooking recipes for two that require only five ingredients — ones you probably already have in the pantry. It also includes recipes for 30-minute meals, one pan or one pot and freezer-friendly dishes you can make ahead of time.

“I am in love with this book and I’ve only made about 10 of the recipes so far. All have turned out amazing! (And my very picky boyfriend agrees!) I had concerns that the dishes might be too simple or blah only using 5 ingredients. NOT the case at all!! So good, so quick. Highly recommend this book for all parties of two out there!” — Liz Z., Amazon reviewer

5. “One Pan, Two Plates: More Than 70 Complete Weeknight Meals for Two” by Carla Snyder, $20.49 (Orig. $24.95)

Credit: Amazon

Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars

Arguably, if you’re cooking for one or two, there usually aren’t many dishes to clean when you’re done. However, with a one-pan recipe, you only have to wash the pan and your plate. All of the recipes in this book also can be made in an hour or less. Try meals like Balsamic Braised Chicken Thighs with Figs and Creamy Polenta or Thyme-Rubbed Salmon with Shallots and Caramelized Cauliflower “Risotto.”

“I buy a lot of cookbooks, and find that I make one or two recipes out of them and then they get shelved. This book, however, has been amazing. I’ve basically been cooking through it, choosing one recipe from each section for each trip to the grocery store. I also have celiac, and therefore must eat gluten-free, and these recipes are easily adapted if necessary for those with dietary restrictions (she does point out those that are vegetarian or that can easily be made vegetarian). And there’s wine pairings. The book is amazing.” – Prickles, Amazon reviewer

6. “Healthier Together: Recipes for Two — Nourish Your Body, Nourish Your Relationships” by Liz Moody, $18.92 (Orig. $25)

Credit: Amazon

Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars

Food is fuel, and this book keeps that in mind while adding a whole lot of flavor. It features over a hundred recipes for two that are all gluten-free, dairy-free and plant-based (basically all anti-inflammatory recipes). Find healthier alternatives for some of your favorites like Cardamom Banana Bread Pancakes with Candied Coffee Walnuts, General Tso’s Cauliflower and Chocolate Tahini Brownie Bites.

“I haven’t tried all the recipes in this book yet (just got it a few days ago), but I love what I have made so far. I also really enjoy the author’s writing and her whole vibe. I’ve never felt inspired by a coo book before, but her relationship with food and stories of cooking with her husband are very compelling. Last night, I made the 10-minute poke bowl — it is amazing, and I can’t wait to make it for a dinner party. The cheesy turmeric rosemary popcorn is one of my favorite recipes of all time. Super easy, feels fancy and fulfills that after-dinner snack craving.” – Monika, Amazon reviewer

7. “The Heart Healthy Cookbook for Two: 125 Perfectly Portioned Low Sodium, Low Fat Recipes” by Jennifer Koslo, PhD, RD, CSSD, $13.73 (Orig. $16.99)

Amazon

Rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars

The author of this cookbook, Jennifer Koslo, is a cardiac dietitian and nutrition expert, so she knows what she’s talking about when it comes to making a heart-healthy meal. The 125 recipes in her book are low in sodium and fat, but pack in a lot of flavor and provide “appropriately-sized meals.” The book even comes with a four-week meal plan to help you shop and take the guesswork out of eating a more balanced diet.

“I bought this for my mom who has to change her diet per her doctor. She absolutely loves it. She has made three meals from it so far and says they are all delicious — the guacamole, the cherry tart, pasta saucet. She is happy having a cookbook with healthy food options that are actually yummy.” – Alana Jean, Amazon reviewer
