We tried the TikTok-famous ‘homemade Dr. Pepper’ recipe — here’s our take

Sorry, soda lovers, but you never need to buy Dr. Pepper again.

At least, that’s if you believe everything TikTok tells you. A recipe for a “homemade” version — which requires just two ingredients and has zero calories — is currently going viral on the app.

Sounds too good to be true? The staff at In The Know certainly thought so, which is why we decided to try it for ourselves.

How to make ‘homemade Dr. Pepper’

First and foremost: the ingredients. The main thing you’ll need is a bottle of black cherry-flavored MiO. If you don’t know what MiO is, it’s basically a super-sweet, super-strong liquid that supposedly makes water taste better (although in this writer’s humble opinion, water is water — it doesn’t need to taste better).

Then, you’ll need some sparkling water. If you want to be as TikTok as possible about it, make it a glass bottle of Topo Chico. That’s how TikTok user Alexandra Castellanos did it in her own viral recipe video, which has received nearly 2 million views on the app.

Also helpful: a bottle opener and a cloth for cleaning — because, as you’ll see in Castellanos’ video, this combo is basically a drinkable science fair volcano.

From there, you’re good to go. Pop the water bottle open and spray in MiO until your drink turns pretty red (this is TikTok, we’re not using exact measurements here). Then, take a sip and enjoy what (maybe?) tastes exactly like Dr. Pepper.

So, does it actually work?

Confession time. This writer, through an embarassing series of life decisions that some would wrongly call “trying to be healthy,” hasn’t had a Dr. Pepper in quite some time. Maybe not for seven years. Maybe not for much longer.

Some good news: No matter your mileage with the soda brand, this homemade version absolutely delivers. The Topo Chico-MiO combo is incredibly fizzy, and feels just as carbonated as any soft drink.

The flavor is equally satisfying. Taste will ultimately vary based on how much MiO you add, but there’s a definitely fruity, almost spicy flavor that takes over after the beverage settles. It’s so delightful, this writer may have “accidentally” messed up his first so he could have a second one.

Final verdict?

Does that mean it’s worth trying at home? Definitely. Is it going to taste exactly like a fresh bottle of Dr. Pepper? Probably not, but it’s pretty dang close.

And in a year where TikTok has given us crazy food combos like chickpea cookie dough and “healthy” Sour Patch Kids, pretty dang close is probably the best we can hope for.
