Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game makes its triumphant return at Ubisoft Forward

After spending years in delisted limbo, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is back.

Ubisoft announced the game’s return at its Ubisoft Forward event held on September 10. It was a long-awaited homecoming for fans who have held out hope for the Scott Pilgrim game since it disappeared from stores in 2014.

The awkwardly named Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game first launched in 2010 as a tie-in release with the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” film. Both the video game and the movie were adapted from the indie comic series “Scott Pilgrim” by Korean Canadian artist Bryan Lee O’Malley, which became a cult classic because of its anime-influenced portrayal of a fantastical, early 2000s Canada.

In all adaptations, “Scott Pilgrim” is about the eponymous Scott Pilgrim, a listless 20-something-year-old Canadian millennial who wanders through life playing in his band Sex Bob-Omb, hanging out with his eclectic friends and getting involved in completely inappropriate relationships (the series opens with him dating Knives Chau, who is only 17 years old).

But Scott’s uneventful life is upheaved when he encounters Ramona Flowers, the literal girl of his dreams who he fantasized about even before meeting her. Scott gets a fire in his belly that he’s never had before and pursues Ramona doggedly (while still dating Knives). But, in order to date her, Ramona says he has to defeat her evil exes

Which neatly takes us to the premise of the video game. Just like the film, the focus of the game is Scott and his friends battling through a gauntlet of foes to defeat all of Ramona’s evil exes.

The beat ‘em up was only a modest hit, but it gained a cult following because of its retro sensibility, dope soundtrack, and, of course, the power of the “Scott Pilgrim” brand.

Which is why fans were shocked when it suddenly vanished from stores in 2014. Nobody knows for sure why it was removed and neither Ubisoft nor Lee O’Malley have revealed why.

But now that the Scott Pilgrim game is finally coming back after years of relentless fan efforts, Bryan Lee O’Malley would like you to leave him alone, thank you very much.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game Complete Edition will include all the DLC released with the original game and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC and will launch during the 2020 holiday season.
