Makeup artist creates intricate, ‘dark fantasy’ looks with inexpensive props

Professional makeup artist Joyce Spakman combines theater makeup with original headpieces and accessories to create dark fantasy characters that are unbelievable to look at.

The Netherlands-based artist became interested in makeup when she was 14. Spakman later studied theater makeup in Amsterdam for three years where she began making photogenic jewelry out of inexpensive supplies to enhance her looks.

“I wanted to complete my characters with some cool styling,” she wrote on Medium. “So I started with headdresses from cheap materials that would still look good on camera. I really liked the creativity involved and the more I did it, the more I wanted to experiment with it.”

Spakman uses her TikTok, candymakeupartist, to showcase the behind-the-scenes work that goes into her intricate and decadent characters. Each looks like they’ve walked out of some twisted fairytale.

In a cathedral-inspired look, Spakman’s model is adorned in a golden miter hat featuring stained glass images of female saints. Her corset consists of daggers going through a heart, while the dress’ long skirt is a matching gold lace. The woman’s body is entirely covered in silverly metallic makeup. Red bursts painted on her hands and face accentuate the biblical feel. It’s certainly eye-catching.

Spakman didn’t stop with the religious imagery there. For another ensemble, she channeled gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins.

The model’s headgear is a giant, upside-down, pink ice cream cone. Her dress is shaped like a pink tutu but instead of tulle, there’s a structured carousel. Peppermints, a blue ice cream cone, cherries and jewels embellish each shoulder piece. Spakman painted on giant eyes with huge, wispy lashes for a sinister and playful makeup look. This is one game of Candy Land you wouldn’t want to mess with.

“That’s art with a big A,” one TikTok user wrote.

“Well, that’s a look,” another said.

“Wow,” someone added with a heart-eyes emoji.
