The chef behind the TikTok account, Koh Cooking, combines Japanese cuisine with Japanese pop culture. It’s food that might literally be too cute to eat.
The chef’s specialty appears to be sculpting white rice into familiar characters then dressing them up with a strategically placed omelet.
Take the cook’s tasty rendering of Baymax from “Big Hero 6.” He made the Disney robot out of rice balls, then tucked a tiny Hiro Hamada, crafted from vegetables, next to him. He then placed a bright yellow omelet on top to resemble a blanket.
For another dish, the chef created a dish starring a snoozing Pikachu from “Pokémon.” Pikachu is sculpted from yellow fried rice. The black tips of his ears are seaweed, while a few Pokeballs made from tomato and onion serve as garnish. To top the dish off, he placed an omelet cover on the sleeping Pokémon.
But the account’s most popular video featured the iconic Hello Kitty. Sculpted from white rice, with a ginger pink bow, the small cat took a nap as the cook enveloped her in runny, yellow eggs.
TikTok users loved Koh Cooking’s take on the dish and it racked up over 1.7 million views.
“Oh to be a rice Hello Kitty getting tucked under a warm egg blanket,” one user said.
