Who is Chase Rutherford? One of his lip-syncing videos is blowing up on TikTok

It really doesn’t take much to go viral on TikTok. Earlier this month, a previously anonymous high school football player became a TikTok sensation after a video of him dancing in the locker room went viral. And now, Chase Rutherford — an influencer with a modest following — is seeing similar success thanks to something as simple as a lip-syncing video.

On Nov. 21, Rutherford — who boasts 1.9 million TikTok followers and counting — uploaded a video lip-syncing to Conan Gray’s “Maniac” as part of a trend. Specifically, he mouths the lyrics “Tell all of your friends that I’m crazy and drive you mad / That I’m such a stalker, a watcher, a psychopath.” The video is nothing special: With the camera zoomed in so only his face is showing, he lip-syncs along and makes very vivid, very dramatic facial expressions.

People seemingly found the snarls and scowls attractive, though. All over TikTok, users are duetting the video, wondering just what it is about it that makes it so irresistible. On certain parts of TikTok, the sound has become directly associated with Rutherford and the infamous video.

“WHY IS THIS SO ATTRACTIVE FOR WHAT-?” one person commented on the original video.

“This is so satisfying I don’t understand,” another added.

“OK am I the only one that thinks this is hot?” a third asked.

Others don’t entirely understand why people are so infatuated by this video in particular.

“You guys find this hot??” one person asked.

“It’s a no from me,” another added.

Who is Chase Rutherford?

According to Famous Birthdays, Rutherford was born on Dec. 5, 2001, in Texas. TikTok isn’t the only place where he produces content: As of writing, he also has a following of 388,000 on Instagram and 167,000 subscribers on YouTube, where his earliest accessible video is from July 2018.

Much like Emma Chamberlain, Rutherford’s style is very unfiltered and relies on quick transitions, outtakes and an unedited stream-of-consciousness. On TikTok, he is known for his comedic skits, silly dances and, of course, lip-syncing videos.

Not much else is known about Rutherford’s private life. On his Instagram, he sometimes shares photos with his parents, and many of his friends from high school appear to have attended Ridge Point High School in Fort Bend County, Texas. It’s unclear whether Rutherford graduated or whether he is currently enrolled in college classes.
