Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer for Season One reveals new map and old enemy

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is entering its very first season. A new trailer for Season One features a possible new map and an enemy from Russell Adler’s past.

After a bumpy multiplayer beta, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is out and preparing for its first season. The Season One trailer features Vikhor “Stitch” Kuzman, who seeks revenge against CIA agent Russell Adler for foiling his operation and landing him in a gulag.

In an interrogation scene, Adler references Grigori Weaver while gouging out Stitch’s eye (which is a war crime, by the way). Astute Call of Duty fans will note that this is a reference to when Lev Kravchenko, Stitch’s former commanding officer, took out Weaver’s left eye also during an interrogation (which, again, is a war crime).

After receiving a taunting message from Stitch, Adler takes his team to a place called the Mall at the Pines in New Jersey. Although Activision has yet to confirm it, it’s not a stretch to assume that the mall will be a playable map.

Season One will also come with new modes, weapons and Battle Pass rewards, according to a post on the official Call of Duty blog. It’ll also contain updates for Call of Duty: Warzone, the free battle royale Call of Duty game.

In the past, Activision kept Modern Warfare and Black Ops as two distinct properties with their own characters and storylines. But the surprise appearance of Imran Zakhaev in Black Ops Cold War suggests that the rebooted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 is now in the same universe at Black Ops.

This link has been getting more firmly established with the new seasonal content for both Modern Warfare and Black Ops. Rather than being an independent spin-off, it seems the new Black Ops is essentially a prequel to the rebooted Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Season One patch will release on Dec. 16.
