Who is Brittany Broski? ‘Kombucha Girl’ has embraced TikTok stardom

Kombucha Girl has a name, and it’s Brittany Tomlinson.

Tomlinson, known as Brittany Broski on TikTok, skyrocketed into internet fame thanks to a 2019 kombucha taste-test reaction video — and her expressive face.

Now Tomlinson has 6 million TikTok followers, 722,000 Instagram followers, 764,000 YouTube subscribers and 442,000 Twitter followers at press time.

How old is Brittany Broski?

The 23-year-old was born on May 10, 1997. Tomlinson worked for a bank after graduating from Texas A&M. She currently resides in Los Angeles and is a full-time content creator.

No, she is not British despite her TikTok profile saying she is British. This is a joke in reference to the fact that people often say Broski looks like she’s from across the pond.

How did she become Kombucha Girl?

An Aug. 6, 2019 video where Tomlinson tried kombucha for the first time is what catapulted her to fame. Before drinking it she declared multiple times that it “smelled like a public restroom.” Then she proceeded to make the iconic expressions that made her an online legend.

Tomlinson’s face waivered between disgust, pleasure, disapproval and then a final pleasant consideration.

The video quickly blew up. Tomlinson credited the LGBTQIA+ community on Twitter for circulating the clip.

“Someone downloaded the video and uploaded it to gay Twitter,” Tomlinson said according to Insider. “And it went viral.”

Tomlinson’s faces were easy to integrate into various memes about anything a user might have a love-hate relationship with.

“It’s an amazing sequence,” Dr. Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, who studies facial expression told the New York Times. “Her expressions are exceptional — easy to see and rich.”

She was fired for her internet fame.

It went viral on gay Twitter, and people started captioning it with some explicit captions,” Tomlinson told Vox. “My boss at the bank that I worked in found it. I was like, ‘I want you to know that this is happening and that it’s not me writing these captions that you’re seeing. I don’t have control over my own content anymore.’ But basically, I got fired from my job.”

She’s created a lot of content beyond the kombucha video.

While Tomlinson has accepted that she will always be known for her kombucha video, she does have a bit more dimension than that.

“I still get called ‘kombucha girl.’ We’re so much more than that, but you can’t really be mad at why you became popular,” Tomlinson told Vox

She has continued to use her meme stardom to entertain her followers by creating funny content.
