What is an egg cleanse? Let’s unpack the limpía TikTok trend

If you are Latinx, it isn’t uncommon to have heard of at least one family member performing a limpía.

The spiritual egg cleanse with roots in indigenous Mesoamerican culture is taking over TikTok (likely thanks to the practice’s appearance on the hit Netflix series the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina)

What is a limpía or egg cleanse?

This ancient ritual was typically conducted by a shaman to clear negative energy by rolling an uncooked egg over the body.

Spiritual TikTok creator @ancientsight encouraged users to observe ancient practices like this with respect to the cultures that created them.

“The egg has long been regarded as a symbol of life and growth,” according to Shaheen Miro, an intuitive, writer and artist “In this way, the egg is a special container that takes on life and energy, when directed specifically it acts like a vacuum absorbing whatever isn’t necessary or vital.”

How to perform a limpía or egg cleanse

The user @taylor10109 gave a step-by-step tutorial on how to perform an egg cleanse.

Start by running your eggs through water and setting your intentions.

Next, burn some herbs, like sage or frankincense and let the egg nestle in the smoke.

Then rub the egg down from your head to your feet.

Crack the egg into a glass of purified water. Finally, it’s time to read your results.

How to read your limpía or egg cleanse

To figure out what kind of negativity has been surrounding you, you must analyze the egg yolk.

For example, the user @hippyb1tch333  gave users a look at one of one of her readings.

Mystic Sisters of the Desert has a list of things to look for in your egg cleanse reading. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Cobwebs mean someone is jealous of you.
  • Bubbles indicate negative energy was absorbed.
  • Spikes, needles or threads show energy was pulled from the aura.
