Nike remains one of the most reputable and trusted apparel brands ever to exist, so when it announces an inaugural launch after over 50 years in existence, shoppers take notice.

This was the case when the brand announced its first completely hands-free sneaker: the Nike Go FlyEase. Perfect for members of the disabled community as well as folks who aren’t fans of laces, these slip-ons require almost no effort to put on or remove.

Perhaps the first truly hands-free sneaker ever, Nike’s Go FlyEase seeks to spearhead a new era of sneakers with its innovative design and function.

A vast improvement from a recent Nike release

While the release is pretty groundbreaking, this general sneaker design isn’t new to the brand. In fact, Nike has been leading the easy-to-enter sneaker space with its standard FlyEase line for some time. It launched the collection to provide easier-to-enter options for adaptive athletes.

The star product from that collection was the 2020-released Metcon FlyEase running shoe. Though impressive, the shoe was not completely hands-free. To get your foot in, you’d have to drop to one knee to hit a button or bend the heel with a finger to get it on.

How does it work?

The Go FlyEase truly offers hands-free functionality with a bendable middle sole that essentially “opens” the shoe allowing for easy removal.

To put on or remove it, simply apply pressure with your foot to the back of the other side. The sole then shifts into the standard position and locks into place.

Once on, it performs and looks like a standard Nike sneaker that’s both comfortable and stable.

“It’s intuitive — easy on, easy off — and evidence of how design, innovation and engineering can meet to answer an ambitious North Star: the creation of a hands-free shoe,” Nike said in a press release.

This release is another way, along with the Nike Swim Hijab, that the respected sportswear brand is making its fashion more inclusive and accessible to more marginalized communities.

When will it be available for purchase?

The Nike Go FlyEase sneakers are currently only available via invitation for select Nike Members. It will be available for general broader purchasing beginning on March 19, 2021.
