Disney’s new ‘Star Wars’ hotel lets you live on a star cruiser

Get ready, “Star Wars” fans, because there’s yet another reason to plan a vacation at Walt Disney World — assuming you can figure out how to get your lightsaber through airport security.

That’s because the park’s brand new, fully immersive resort will start taking reservations later this year, Disney announced in a blog post earlier this month. The hotel, officially called Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, opens for guests starting in 2021.

Basically, the resort is as close as “Star Wars” fans can get to living in a galaxy far, far away — complete with “space view” windows, lightsaber training sessions and a lounge full of intergalactic drinks and games.

“Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a completely new type of experience,” Ann Morrow Johnson, executive producer for Walt Disney Imagineering, wrote in the blog post. “You’re going to live onboard a star cruiser … and you can get wrapped up in the larger Star Wars story.”

The experience, which lasts just two nights, brings visitors aboard The Halcyon, a massive, lookalike star cruiser masquerading as a hotel. Guests even travel to the resort via “launch pods,” according to the Walt Disney World site.

“This is a small capsule where you will then simulate the experience of blasting off into space,” Johnson said in an accompanying video detailing the project.

Johnson goes on to say that upon arriving, “Everything in the spaceship wants to reinforce that feeling of you’re on a star cruiser, in a galaxy far, far away.” The ship comes complete with a bridge and engine rooms to explore, plus an atrium where “passengers” can interact with crew members resembling “Star Wars” characters.

The hotel’s 2021 opening will arrive less than two years after Disney opened its “Star Wars”-themed park, Galaxy’s Edge at both Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. Both parks, which began welcoming visitors last year, feature a life-size Millenium Falcon, interactive rides and lots of blue milk.
