Throughout my natural hair journey, I’ve tried and tested some really great products. And while I’m not proud of having tried so many of them, the hair dryers for textured hair that I’ve come across make wash (and style) day a breeze.
Let me start by saying to use a heat protectant, people! Some kinky and curly-haired enthusiasts think that using just a leave-in conditioner (read: me) will be enough to moisturize your hair while blowing it out. It’s not.
Now, out of the plethora of hair dryers on the market, not too many of them have the right comb attachments, a high power wattage, nor multiple heat settings to address the needs of textured type 4 hair — like mine. Thankfully, there are a select few I’ve come across that work great for everything from blowouts to diffusing and detangling.
Shop: Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer And Styler, $36.15, ($Orig. $49.99)
If you type in “The best hair dryer for 4C hair” on YouTube, this Revlon hair dryer pops up most often. Naptural85, who’s a natural hair YouTuber set to star in a Jackie Aina-produced documentary, has used this hair dryer in several of her videos.
“This thing has gotten so used, it’s missing all of the button labels,” she said in a recent video, “so I’m just going to have to figure out what’s low.”
Shop: Conair Pro Yellow Bird Hair Dryer, $41.98 (Orig. $45.99)
I don’t know who else gets charged extra for their hair to get blown out prior to getting box braids, but I sure did last summer. So instead of complaining, I actually just bought the Yellow Bird hair dryer that my favorite hair braiders used on me. Plus, it’s on sale for $41.
Shop: GHD Air Professional Performance Hair Dryer, $118.99 (Orig. $139.99)
Is it ridiculous that I’ve used this hair dryer for everything except detangling? Maybe. But I still think this GHD hair dryer is worth it. I personally love this gem for its ionic technology, which helps to reduce flyaways. It may have 1600W, but it still thoroughly (and quickly) dries the hair. I typically use this to quickly dry and even diffuse my curls, as I did for this wash-and-go video below using the Flawless by Gabrielle Union Collection.
Plus, I’ll even use this GHD hair dryer when drying my rollers or twists alongside this $10 bonnet dryer attachment I got on Amazon.
Shop: Conair Pro Silver Bird Hair Dryer, $41.28 (Orig. $49.99)
I recently bought this hair dryer after the Black hairstylists at the Coily Collective used it on me. After only a few uses, I’m already in love. There are multiple heat settings on this one, so you can switch depending on what your hair loves. Plus, it comes with a comb attachment and an extra nozzle.
Shop: Kiss Red Detangler Dryer Plus 3 Attachments, $33.99
One of the other favorite hair dryers you’ll find on YouTube is this Kiss Red Detangler Dryer. Type 4 hair YouTuber NappyFu has actually compared this hair dryer to the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler in a video. This option has over 2000W along with a double-layered comb attachment to thoroughly detangle the hair while drying it.
Shop: Conair 1875 Watt 3-In-1 Styling Hair Dryer With Ionic Technology, $25.98 (Orig. $29.99)
The Conair 1875 Watt 3-in-1 Hair Dryer features ionic technology. It also acts as a detangler, straightener and volumizer with its three attachments. Not to mention, it’s super affordable. With almost 3,000 reviews on Amazon — and listed as an “Amazon’s Choice” product — there are kudos for its drying power and lightweight quality.
“I’m naturally curly and usually after I blow dry my hair I have to flat iron it as well to get the sleek look I want,” one customer wrote. “This dryer cuts the straightening process in half for me as it allows me to cut back on the amount of heat I put on my hair because I no longer have to flat iron after drying.”
More brands are beginning to think about kinkier curl types when designing hair tools. But for right now, these hair dryers for textured hair are some of the go-tos.
