5 unexpected uses for bacon grease

Bacon makes everything better. But what to do with the leftover bacon grease? The smoky, savory liquid should never be poured down the drain. Not only does it quickly harden and result in a plumbing catastrophe, but it’s also wasteful. If you’re a bacon lover, there are plenty of ways to use the grease to bacon-ify your life.

Here are 5 uses for bacon grease you never thought of — none of which involve fried eggs.

  1. Popcorn flavor

Either pop your kernels in the bacon grease itself, or drizzle a little melted grease on top of a bowl of popcorn to give your snack some smoky depth.

  1. Baconnaise

If you want to give your sandwiches or salads a little extra bacon-y kick, add bacon grease to a DIY mayonnaise recipe. This also works as a tasty, savory dip.

  1. Spread it on pizza crust

If your kitchen sometimes doubles as a pizzeria, consider spreading bacon grease on pre-cooked pizza dough. This will add flavor and create a crispy texture to your pie!

  1. Sweet and Bacon-y Chocolate Chip Cookies

For fans of sweet and salty desserts, this is a must-try. Add a dollop of bacon grease to your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and enjoy the magic of flavor contrast. It’s chocolate. It’s bacon. What more could you ask for?

  1. Season your cast iron skillet

Any home chef knows they’d be nothing without their cookware. Treat your cast iron skillet to a nice coat of bacon grease to give it some flavor that will leak into whatever you cook in it. Coat a clean cast iron with some bacon grease and then put it in the oven for a couple of hours. This turns your cast iron in a Bacon Midas, infusing whatever it touches with delicious bacon flavor.

But before you start giving your bacon grease a second life, you have to make sure it’s stored properly. To safely store bacon grease, place a coffee filter over a container and then slowly pour the grease into it. The filter will catch any bits and leave you with clear bacon grease.

From there, you can put the grease in a fridge for up to 3 months, or in the freezer forever.
