If you haven’t noticed an influx of quilted gym totes in your neighborhood yet, keep an eye out — because this trending athleisure staple is sure to make its way to your zip code soon.
In the fitness hub that is New York City, people can be seen with their quilted holdalls everywhere from subway platforms downtown to the tree-lined streets of the Upper East Side, proving the versatility and widespread appeal of this convenient and sporty accessory.
Many of the ubiquitous bags are actually merch from the city’s leading boutique fitness brands.
When GRIT BXNG (the buzzy Pitbull and Tony Robbins-backed boxing gym-meets-nightclub) opened recently, fitness fanatics rushed to snap up the logo emboldened tote as part of the intro offer. Similarly, a near-identical quilted gym bag is sold at Equinox locations around Manhattan.
Perhaps the brand responsible for the explosion in popularity is MZ Wallace, which is designed by born and bred New Yorkers Monica Zwirner and Lucy Wallace Eustice. Sienna Miller is a fan, as is Jaime King — both of whom have carried the brand’s squishy foldable and rollable totes, duffels and backpacks, which come in up to 27 different colors.
