For about two years now, the Nap Dress has been a part of the fashion scene, but it truly took on its own life during the summer of 2020. Back then, the idea of quarantine was still new, and people were eager to buy loungewear to curl up in when doing puzzles and tie-dying everything they owned.

However, the term Nap Dress was truly coined by Hill House Home founder and CEO Nell Diamond in January 2020. This particular style of dress continues to be a must-have in any social-distancer’s closet to this day. Essentially, this type of dress can pass as a nightgown, but it’s also appropriate daywear, thanks to its billowy shape, smocking and opaque fabric. It has a sort of prairie-like charm to it with its ruffled tiers and airy prints.

According to The New Yorker, Diamond describes her own aesthetic as a “Victorian ghost,” so this dress falls right in line at Hill House Home. The brand also specializes in bedding and tableware that looks straight out of a posh garden party.

However, for those looking to get in on the trend now — but expecting it to be short-lived— you may not want to shell out over $100 for one of Hill House Home’s designs (or even splurge more at Sleeper). Luckily, many other brands have caught on to the popularity of the dress, so there are plenty of more affordable options to shop now.

Whether you plan on actually sleeping in the dress or wearing it during the spring and summer, doesn’t owning something with the word “nap” in its name almost sell itself? Below, shop six nap dresses that are all under $50.
