Dad sparks controversy with ‘unbelievable’ financial punishment for his teen daughter: ‘You owe [her] an apology’

Reddit users have called out a father’s harsh punishment after he took away his daughter’s vacation trip.

As he shared on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum, the father promised to pay for his daughter to go on a trip with her friends. However, when his anniversary came around and he asked her to babysit at the last minute, she had other plans. The father became so furious that he refused to pay for the trip.

“My daughter Zoey has been planning a trip with her friends for weeks and asked for help with money,” he wrote. “I promised her that I’ll be paying for her part of the trip, which is about $80. Two days ago was … [our] wedding anniversary. We planned to go out and celebrate in the evening and I asked Zoey if she could watch her younger siblings. She said she wanted to meet her best friend at a party before she leaves town as her friend will be moving away this month. She suggested we get a babysitter but it was already [too] late for me to call.”

When the daughter wouldn’t change her mind, the father decided to punish her.

“I tried to convince Zoey to skip going out and watch her brothers but she refused,” he said. “I was getting pissed. I brought up the trip that I was paying for and told her I will take the money back if she refused to watch her brothers for the evening. She said no, and I told her ‘no trip then’ unless she gets the money herself because I’m no longer paying for it. She screamed at me, calling me unbelievable for taking money back just [because] she wanted to attend her best friend’s goodbye party. My wife said I was too harsh on Zoey.”

Reddit users thought the father’s punishment was too extreme.

“You owe Zoey and your wife an apology,” a user wrote

“He waits until the last minute, then punishes her because she has important plans?” another commented

“He expected her to be available on a whim, then punished her by taking back a gift,” someone wrote
