Mom-to-be faces backlash over ‘narcissistic’ pregnancy announcement: ‘Wrong place, wrong time’

A woman can’t believe her sister-in-law’s (SIL) pregnancy announcement ruined her engagement dinner.

She explained the dilemma on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum. During her engagement party, her fiancé’s sister revealed she was expecting. The Reddit poster became furious and confronted her sister-in-law in the middle of the party. This caused her fiancé’s family to up and leave. It was a disaster.

“My engagement dinner was on Tuesday. His and my family came as well as our friends,” she explained. “My sister-in-law approached me with her husband and handed me my engagement gift. I opened it to find a pair of baby shoes inside. SIL said, ‘congratulations, you’re going to be an auntie and uncle!!!.’ She announced that she and her husband were expecting. I was in shock as everyone got up from their seats and started congratulating her and her husband for their pregnancy. I pulled my SIL aside and asked why she decided to announce her pregnancy at my engagement party specifically. She said she and her husband saw this as a chance since most of the family was there, and it’s a double joy.”

The Reddit poster then called out the sister-in-law in front of everyone.

“I explained that I’ve been looking forward to my engagement dinner for a long time and spent time and money to make it happen,” the Reddit poster said. “I flat out called her behavior out and told her her announcement was at the wrong place, wrong time. She got all p***** and accused me of already resenting her baby because it’s the first grandchild and that she doesn’t want to play my ‘mental games.’ It escalated after she raised her voice, I asked her to please [leave]. SIL and her husband said they were going ‘somewhere else’ to celebrate and asked who wanted to join them. We had no choice but to end the party soon since most of my fiance’s family wanted to go after giving me nasty looks.”

Reddit users thought the pregnancy announcement was inappropriate.

“It’s fairly narcissistic,” one person said

“What a bunch of mean girl crap,” another wrote

“You weren’t wrong to be upset,” a user commented
