TikTok users are freaking each other out with an unsettling song

If you haven’t heard “Astronaut in the Ocean” yet, some people would say consider yourself lucky.

The viral song by Australian rapper Masked Wolf is taking over social media. It’s so popular it’s become a parody of itself and produced numerous memes.

Here’s what you need to know about the song of the summer no one can stand.

What is a mashup?

A music mashup is when two songs or more songs are combined to create a new one. It’s usually done by overlaying vocals with one track onto the instrumentals of another one.

Mashups are pretty popular sounds on TikTok. Like this one that uses Ariana Grande’s vocals over Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous” instrumental.

What is Astronaut in the Ocean?

“Astronaut in the Ocean” is a song by Australian rapper Masked Wolf. It was released in 2019 to little fanfare.

Then in 2020, social media users started adding it to their videos for dramatic effect to transition into action sequences. Like Twitter user @KllSEY’s dance compilation.

This year Masked Wolf signed to Elektra Records and re-released the single giving it another boost in popularity. By May 19, “Astronaut in the Ocean” was No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart registering 19.9 million U.S. streams the week ending May 13.

However, just like all things that amass widespread popularity, the song is facing a huge backlash

The YouTube music critic Anthony Fantano released a comedic six-minute rant on the song.

“The song actually reveals itself to be kind of generic and mediocre,” Fantano said. “I can very much hear the song landing on the next Fast and Furious soundtrack.”

One TikToker made it his personal brand to mock Astronaut in the Ocean mashups.

The user @julian.fayard’s whole schtick is crying to Masked Wolf mashups. In this one he can hardly bear a 1D remix.

“This is not One Direction. This is no direction,” one user joked

“This one really hurt,” another said

But this “Astronaut” mashup featuring “Dance Monkey” and “Fight Song” just sounded like straight noise. Totally makes sense he’s crying.

“Y’all taking it too far,” someone commented.

“How can you even make it that bad?” a person asked

However, you can never go wrong with a Britney Spears “Toxic” remix. You can expect tears of joy in this one.

“Wait, this one is slightly room temperature,” a user responded.

“Aight. This one is good,” a person wrote

It’s kind of like Rickrolling at this point

Basically, “Astronaut in the Ocean” has become the new Rickrolling. For the uninitiated, Rickrolling is when someone sends you a link to a website, but it turns out to be a clip of Rick Asley singing “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

“I literally cannot escape it,” @rachelberryfromglee said as a song she was listening to transitioned into “Astronaut in the Ocean.”

The user @aaronthecopywriter asked, “What’s a song lyric that drives you crazy because they should have used a different word?”

Then @waccotaco responded by stitching a video where he lamented the lyrics to “Aint No Mountain High Enough” by Tammi Terrell. He offered some improvements to the song… like the verbatim lyrics to “Astronaut in the Ocean.”
