Natural deodorants have gotten a bad rap over the years. However, it may simply be due to a lack of knowledge on what actually makes a natural deodorant, well…natural.

First, let’s start with the basics: unlike your typical deodorant, natural deodorants do not contain aluminum, the ingredient that essentially keeps you from sweating more. In fact, most pit sticks you see on the market today are some combination of deodorant and antiperspirant.

According to Healthline, deodorants use antimicrobial agents to kill bacteria, versus an antiperspirant that uses aluminum-based salts to plug up sweat glands (thus keeping odor at bay). So, if you are looking for a product that helps with sweating, a natural deodorant may not be the first place you look. However, most natural deodorants contain ingredients like cornstarch or arrowroot that absorb excess moisture.

Finding a natural deodorant that works for you is like kissing a lot of frogs and hoping one is a prince. And while it may take a few tries before you find your perfect match, you can feel better knowing that you’re one step closer to putting all-natural ingredients on your body.
