Enameled cast iron is some of the most dynamic cookware on the market. But it can cost a pretty penny. And though many brands claim theirs is dishwasher-safe, handwashing will extend the lifetime of your pot. Here’s how to clean your enameled cast iron cookware.
Items you’ll need:
- Scotch-Brite pad
- Dish soap
- Hot water
- Baking soda
- A plastic food scraper
- A hard plastic sponge
Step 1: Take care of the outside
If something bubbled over the outside of your pot, make a paste consisting of three parts baking soda and one part water and scrub it onto the spill stains with a Scotch-Brite pad. Do not use steel wool.
Step 2: Soap and soak the inside
Fill the pot with a little bit of dish soap and hot water. Then add two tablespoons of baking soda and let it sit for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Scrape off excess food
Pour out about half of the water, then use a plastic scraper to remove any stubborn residue from the bottom of the pot.
Step 4: Sponge scrub
Pour out the remaining water and scraped-off food bits. Then fill with fresh hot water and a few squirts of dish soap and scrub the bottom and sides with the plastic sponge.
Step 5: Apply the paste to the inside
If your enameled cast iron still has some burnt-on bits, use the baking soda paste from Step 1 on the inside. Let it sit for a few hours or even overnight if you can.
Step 6: Add hot water
After the paste has sat nice and long, add some hot water and scrub the stained areas with a sponge.
Step 7: Final wash and rinse
After the stubborn stains have come out, do a final wash with hot water and a little dish soap and rinse it out.
Step 8: Dry and store
Place the pot in a drying rack or gently on a towel to dry. Once completely dry, store as usual.
The versatility of enameled cast iron is a must-have for any home chef, but it’s important to maintain it so you get the most mileage out of the investment. Taking a few extra little steps in the cleaning process goes a long way.
