I tried sleeping on a cashmere mattress, and it totally transformed my life

Mattresses should last you about 10 years. I had mine for just over eight years, but it was in the last two months that it started to sink. A crater began to form in the center, and there was a spring sticking out on one side. The mattress I once loved was now uncomfortable, which made sleeping through the night difficult. That’s when I realized it was time for an upgrade.

I went to a few mattress stores in my area to play Goldilocks, but every mattress seemed too squishy, too bouncy or just too firm. Conveniently, around the same time, the team at Birch by Helix reached out to see if I wanted to test their latest launch, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress. I saw that it was made with non-toxic natural materials, including real cashmere wool, and I knew I had to give it a try. It was a sign!

The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress came in a box about one week after ordering it online. Once I opened it up and rolled it out onto my bed frame, the instructions said to let it sit for 72 hours so it could reach its full firmness. However, I couldn’t wait and slept on it that night — it was perfect.

This was my first time sleeping on a mattress from a box, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s firm, but not overly stiff. Some may call it “medium-firm” for a mattress. It also feels nice and cool. I didn’t wake up from feeling overheated, even on a night when my landlord turned on the building’s heat, and my old gas radiator started to hiss.

To get more into the nitty-gritty, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress features premium organic materials: wool sustainably sheared from New Zealand sheep, latex from trees in Southeast Asia, cotton and steel coils from the U.S. and cashmere from goats in Mongolia – although all of the brand’s products are made in the U.S.

When you think of cashmere, you probably think of fancy winter sweaters. However, cashmere is also naturally cooling. Here’s a fun fact: According to Birch by Helix’s website, it comes from the undercoat of cashmere goats, who live in extremely harsh climates. Their ultra-fine, lightweight hairs are insulating, yet breathable and also moisture-wicking to keep the goats warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In case you’re curious, the brand gets its cashmere specifically “from free-range goats that are tended by nomadic herders in Inner Mongolia who comb and shear the goats annually.”

In addition to its swanky materials, this mattress features a zoned lumbar support system to hug your body just right and provide extra support around your lower back. It also uses latex to provide ergonomic pressure relief. Whether you’re a back, side or combination sleeper, you’ll feel comfortably supported throughout the night.

This is Birch by Helix’s second mattress in its lineup. The brand started with its standard Birch Natural Mattress. While I haven’t tried that one, the Luxe is the upgraded version. Both mattresses come with a 25-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. Sleep on it for a little over three months, and if you don’t like it, you can send it back for a full refund.

You can get the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king sizes, starting at $1,849. Leading up to Black Friday though, you can get $400 off your mattress, plus two free Eco-Rest Pillows and no-contact free shipping with the code BFSALE400. Your order will ship within one to three weeks.

It may not be the cheapest mattress-in-a-box, but better sleep is worth it. I no longer wake up grumpy and frustrated from lack of sleep or act like a zombie come dinnertime. It has totally transformed my life.
