If there’s one downside to summer, it’s dealing with bug bites. Even if you douse yourself in bug spray, insects still find a way to leave their itchy mark on you. And for those times when you can’t stop scratching, there’s one simple tool that could help provide some instant relief.

Amazon shoppers are in love with this best-selling Bug Bite Thing Suction Tool. It’s a small device that helps alleviate the itching, stinging and swelling that occurs from a bug bite.

How? Well, it literally sucks up the poison that gets left under the skin, including insect venom, saliva and other irritants. In the case of a mosquito bite, it’s the insect’s salvia that triggers that uncontrollable itching, according to Medical News Today.

For those who are magnets for insects, the brand boasts that the tool can also help relieve bites from fleas, fire ants, chiggers, seal lice, bees, wasps and biting flies. Additionally, it can be a handy tool when you have a run-in with an angry bee. According to the product description, it can also be used to remove splinters and bee stingers, thanks to the nifty little scrapper on its handles.

To use, just hold the device in place over the bug bite. Then press down and hold for 10 to 20 seconds. For the most effective results, the brand suggests using the tool immediately after the bug bite occurs and repeatedly thereafter if you experience more irritation.

As a bonus, the company was founded by mom and woman entrepreneur Kelley Higney, who was looking for an effective way to relieve her daughter’s mosquito bites.

“We tried everything. Creams, ice, dryer sheets, even the hot spoon trick. You name it, we tried it. Every. Single. Thing.” Higney wrote on the company’s website. “My heart ached for her and I became motivated to find a better option.”

And though Higney originally made the device to soothe her daughter’s discomfort, hundreds of Amazon shoppers have taken to it too. With more than 1,000 five-star reviews and 9,000 customer ratings, the Bug Bite Thing Suction Tool is the No. 1 insect bite treatment listed on Amazon.

“I was a huge skeptic; how could a little suction cure this agonizingly itchy allergic reaction?” one reviewer wrote. “I’ll be honest. I still really don’t know how it does, but it provides instant relief that no pill, cream or injection has ever achieved for me.”

Another reviewer raved that the product was a “game changer.”

“If it doesn’t completely cure the itch with one pull, you just do it again,” the shopper explained. “The hickey it leaves behind is a small price to pay for itch relief.”

At the same time, not all reviewers experienced such fantastic results. One reviewer pointed out that while it was definitely effective for many of their bites, they encouraged shoppers not to expect “magic.”
