In 2018, Burger King played an April Fools’ prank on its customers, claiming it was now selling a “chocolate Whopper.”
The joke sparked panic among fast food fans, with customers wondering whether the entrée was real. What would a sweet hamburger taste like, anyway?
The item was decidedly a prank, but now, some customers can try a chocolate Whopper for real — if they even want to, that is.
Burger King Taiwan recently announced a chocolate-topped burger as part of a special promotion, Kotaku reported. The result? The Hershey’s Chocolate Whopper, which is currently available in the city of Tainan.
While the April Fools’ Whooper was a full-on dessert with chocolate buns and raspberry sauce, this one is a bit more subtle. It’s basically just a regular Whopper with some chocolate sauce spread across the bun.
It’s unclear if the item will make its way to the U.S., but that didn’t stop social media users from weighing in. Almost immediately, Burger King fans took to Twitter with their thoughts on the sugary sandwich.
“Ugh, a chocolate whopper? That sounds disgusting. More disgusting than grilled pineapple on a burger,” one user wrote.
“It is a terrible [sic] idea, idk who’s the ppl came up with that…” another added.
“Easy pass,” another added.
Others seemed more positive on the idea though.
As Hypebeast reported, the burger comes topped with a peanut sauce, which some customers have said combines with the chocolate to bring out a stronger umami flavor. Fox News reported that the sandwich is selling well too, drawing large crowds where it’s available.
Whether they’d tried it or not, a few social media users seemed impressed by Burger King’s innovation.
“That sounds yummy with bacon, one user wrote.
“On my way,” another added.
