In The Know and Complex News have come together to bring you the latest news in hip-hop music and culture.
In a new interview with Elle, Cardi B talked about her sophomore album — a project that’s been on hold for a while, now given the pandemic and the rapper’s desire to “sit with her work.”
“People haven’t seen a music video from me for like eight months, so they’re expecting greatness,” Cardi said. “And I have to deliver.”
Unlike other rappers who have been churning out new music, Cardi told Elle she enjoys putting out singles and albums that she feels like people are listening to for how good they are, not because her name is on it.
Her second album comes at a time when not only rap music is dominating the Hot 100, but female rappers are making history. Nicki Minaj’s feature on Doja Cat’s “Say So” shot up the charts in May and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” remix with Beyoncé followed behind at No. 2.
But Cardi’s plans for this album have been about female empowerment, so there’s no rivalries or competition between her and other rappers (she even collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on her newest single, “WAP.”)
“My music is always going to make a woman feel like a bad b****,” she said.
Her marriage with Migos’ Offset will also be a theme throughout the album.
“There’s a lot of love, there’s a lot of passion, there’s a lot of trust,” she said about her relationship with her husband. “It’s always us against the world.”
