Check out this model’s colorful, streetwear-packed closet

Hannah Mussette (@musette) is a Brooklyn-based model and DJ who blends glamorous streetwear with wallet-friendly pieces. In this episode of ITK: Coveted Closets, Hannah walks us through her enviable collection and shares some one-of-a-kind fashion tips to make your own closet a force to be reckoned with.

Growing up in Florida, where the typical trends were to throw on a T-shirt and jeans, Hannah says she didn’t get to experiment much with fashion. Since moving to Brooklyn, she’s felt encouraged to leave her comfort zone as far as style and try out different types of pieces. “In New York, you can wear anything, and no one’s going to bat an eye,” she says.

“Dressing is a diary for me,” Hannah explains. “How do I feel this day? How do I want to express myself?” On days when she’s feeling sad or moody, Hannah tends to stick to neutrals, blacks, whites and grays. Conversely, when she’s feeling outspoken and happy, she opts for colors that make her happy, like yellow, red, green and blue.

Hannah describes her style as feminine, streetwear and colorful. One of her favorite pieces is a pair of MRDR BRVDO jeans, which she loves for their colorful patchwork detailing, intricate stitches and distressed elements. Next, she shows a denim jacket embellished with metallic rhinestone fringe. “You would think it’s designer, you would think it’s Chanel,” she says. “But no, it’s Forever21 and I actually custom-made the fringes on it.” Other highlights include classic Dr. Martens boots that she loves for their chunky platform sole, Jeffrey Campbell cowboy boots, square-frame sunglasses and a green TELFAR bag.

As the closest tour reaches its end, Hannah shares her five most powerful style tips.

1. Use the color wheel

“The color wheel conversation, when it comes to styling, doesn’t come up a lot,” Hannah says. Select colors that complement each other on the color wheel for a look that stands out.

2. Add dimension by layering

Layer with clothes that give contrast to each other.

3. Be the baddest on the block

Pick clothes that make you feel like your most confident self.

4. Trends put you in a box

“Yes, it’s good to look at trends,” Hannah says, but she encourages choosing clothing based on how much you like it on yourself and incorporating trends into what feels most authentic to your own style.

5. Thrift as much as you can

It’s better to mix and match what you have in your closet with thrift shop finds than to constantly buy new pieces.
