If you’re looking to rock your socks off with a fashionable brand that supports the LGBTQIA+ community, Conscious Step (@consciousstep) needs to be on your radar! Conscious Step is a sustainable, ethically sourced clothing company committed to environmental and social change. On this episode of In The Know: Pink Money, host Teraj (@teraj08) sits down with the founder of Conscious Step, Prashant Mehta, to discuss how the brand uses their socks to help make a difference.

Ever since he was young, Prashant has known the importance of giving back to the community. After studying finance in college, Prashant wanted to find a way to make donating to charity more accessible to a mass market, while also making charity a major pillar of his life. “That naturally allowed me to start Conscious Step,” he says.

Conscious Step went live as a crowdfunder in 2013 with three different charity partnerships, and today, Prashant proudly shares that his brand is partnered with 17 different charities from around the world. “We try to make [charity] fun, easy, and accessible [for people] to give back to different non-profits [and] understand global issues,” Prashant tells In The Know.

One charity that Conscious Step partners with is The Trevor Project, an organization that focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQIA+ youth. “[The Trevor Project] really just tries to empower people to get more involved, take supportive action, and just be there for people,” says Prashant. “They have so many members who are there on hotlines and in different ways to help people, and it’s really been an educational and empowering experience for our entire team.”

A portion of the sales for every product Conscious Step makes as part of their Pride collection, goes directly to The Trevor Project. This includes the “Socks That Save LGBTQ Lives,” a line of stylish socks that feature eye-catching, pride-inspired designs.

The first pair Conscious Step designed for this line featured a rainbow pattern, but they have since moved on to “less typical” designs, according to Prashant. “We’re trying to encourage our customers to be bold and proud of who [they] are,” Prashant tells In The Know. Some of those designs include lip patterns and crowns, and there’s also the “Conscious Comfort” collection, which features pattern-free, simplistic colors that allow wearers to be “quiet and humble supporters,” according to Prashant.

In addition to their charitable angle, Conscious Step ensures that all of their clothing is ethically sourced, vegan, and fair trade certified. “Our goal is just to be a more educated company, and to share and inspire that same education amongst ourselves,” says Prashant. “Who you surround yourself with is really the key to getting where you want to go in life. I’m grateful for The Trevor Project and what they do, and [grateful] to be surrounded by such amazing individuals.”
