Everyone has different hair goals, whether it’s taming frizzy curls, adding volume to fine strands or strengthening brittle ends. That’s why Function of Beauty invites people to make their own personalized shampoo, conditioner and other hair products.
The company was launched four years ago by MIT graduates that since have created over a million of different shampoo and conditioner combinations for its customers. In fact, co-founder Zahir Dossa told us that they’ve never created the same combination twice.
SHOP: Function of Beauty shampoo + conditioner , $36-$49
To create custom products, customers will first need to take Function of Beauty’s hair quiz. During the quiz they’ll define their hair type and select five hair goals (there are 18 goals to choose from such as hydration, shine, straighten, voluminize, curl definition and anti-aging). Dossa dished that the most common goal customers choose is to strengthen hair, but overall, the goal combinations widely vary.
In the final steps, customers can name their formula after themselves, then choose a color, scent and even strength of scent. (We especially love the nude peach scent!)
The product —which is vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free and sulfate-free — is created and shipped within a week or sometimes less. If a customer gets hooked, they can also set up a subscription to have automatic refills shipped every month or every couple of months. Prices range from $36 to $49 for a set, depending on the size of bottles.
New as of November, the company also launched a personalized hair mask and hair serum, and in March, a leave-in conditioner. The hair mask can help take your strands from thirsty to hydrated, while the serum can enhance shine and smooth out any frizz. The leave-in conditioner is especially good for treating dry hair in the winter and preventing static (like when you put on your favorite sweater and suddenly every hair on your head clings to your neck — no thanks!).
We tried it and after a quick wash, condition and rinse, our hair felt strong, soft to the touch and looked super shiny, hitting all of our personal hair goals. Plus, the scent was so refreshing!
