Here’s why fans think JoJo Siwa ‘came out’ in a TikTok video

Fans have been flocking to JoJo Siwa’s TikTok after two videos featuring the star sparked speculation that she was coming out as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The 17-year-old singer and social media star shared a video on Jan. 20 lip-syncing Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” a powerful self-acceptance anthem. She mouthed the lyrics “No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian transgender life / I’m on the right track baby, I was born to survive.”

There are rainbow lights projected in the background of her video, and she’s wearing a rainbow bow in her hair. Of course, sporting rainbows isn’t necessarily unusual for her colorful persona.

In another video uploaded the same day, Siwa danced alongside several stars from Teen Beach Movie to Paramore’s “Aint It Fun.”

Baby now you’re one of us,” Siwa mouthed in the video. The caption includes the hashtag #pridehousela.

That hashtag coupled with the lyrics in the earlier video sparked online chatter over whether the star was coming out. Even Siwa’s famous friends, including James Charles, left comments congratulating her on the video.

“Did she just come out or am I trippin’,” one user wrote.

“If she just came out this is such an iconic way to do it,” another said.

“Welcome to the family JoJo,” a third wrote.

“What if this is just a normal video,” a fourth mused.

“This feels like a big deal if it is what I think it is,” journalist Yashar Ali said in a viral tweet in which he shared Siwa’s “Born This Way” video. “JoJo Siwa is hugely popular with kids. And as someone just pointed out, if it is what I think it is, she’s doing it at the height of her fame when she’s selling out arenas.”

Siwa has not yet commented on any of the speculation, and some fans rightly expressed concern that people would label her sexuality before she explicitly did herself.

“Just a reminder not to label her as anything until she confirms her sexuality,” one wrote.

Siwa did retweet one tweet from Twitter user Anastasia Golovashkina that included the pride flag emoji and the caption, “@itsjojosiwa is on the right track, she was born this way.”

It bears mentioning that it’s actually quite popular for TikTok users to come out as members of the LGBTQIA+ community with the subtle use of songs in their posts. For instance, it’s widely recognized that playing “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood signals that the subject of the video is bisexual.

Siwa is known for being open with her fans and quickly addressing rumors and drama, so we’re hoping to know the true meaning of her video whenever she’s ready to open up about it.
