Blotting papers are a summertime staple for anyone with oily skin, but you don’t have to drop dollars on name-brand papers to get the shine-free benefits. Instead, this simple DIY helps you make them at home for less.
For those unfamiliar, blotting papers dab away excess oil and shine from your face without disturbing makeup. Many beauty lovers use them on the T-zone, which is the area on your forehead, chin and nose that tends to get oily throughout the day.
Lisa makes her DIY blotting papers with coffee filters, gift wrapping tissue and — wait for it — disposable paper toilet seat covers. To cut the papers to size — and add some pizzaz — Lisa uses a star-shaped puncher for some sheets. But you can simply use scissors to cut yours into circles or rectangles, like she does for others. To store the cute cut-outs, Lisa uses colorful envelopes to keep her pretty papers sanitary and secure in her bag.

But, let’s be real, not all the hacks are sure-fire hits.
“My least favorite of the three was the coffee filter,” Lisa says in the video. “The texture is a little stiff, and it felt like it was soaking up a lot of my foundation in addition to the oil on the surface of my skin.”
Though the tissue paper and disposable toilet seat cover hacks are clear winners here, Lisa says that all three options get the job done.
“They will all do the trick and make your skin look super matte,” she says. “Just make sure you dab and gently press the paper on to your skin so you don’t remove all your makeup.”
