How to make your own mini ice roller without spending a cent

As the summer temperatures heat up to record highs, it might be time to add an ice roller to your beauty routine.

Not only is it a great way to cool off, but it has actually got some serious skin and wellness benefits. Ice rollers are gadgets stored in the freezer that make it easier to ice your skin which can help with skin issues and body aches. Thanks to a genius hack by TikToker Emilie Karlsen, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get one.

In The Know’s Phoebe Zaslav tried out Karlsen’s DIY to turn an old lipstick tube into a convenient ice roller.

“Ice rolling has so many amazing benefits for your skin,” Phoebe says. “Like reducing puffiness and redness, relieving headaches and sore muscles, shrinking your pores and boosting blood circulation.”

They can also be a bit pricey, ranging from $15 to $100. It’s always better for the environment and your wallet to take something old and make it new.

You’ll need:

  • Q-tips
  • Paper towel
  • Hand soap
  • Nail tool (or any pointed scraping device)

1. First, Phoebe breaks the remaining lipstick off of the tube.

“Use your nail tool, toothpick, or whatever you have to scrape it all out of the tube,” she explains.

2. She thoroughly cleans the tube using warm water and hand soap so that any residue is gone.

“I switched off using a q-tip and paper towel, and towards the end, I wrapped the nail tool with the paper towel to really get into the nooks and crannies,” Phoebe says.

3. Next, she fills the empty lipstick with cold water then stores it in the freezer overnight. But there was a bit of an unforeseen obstacle.

“I didn’t realize my lipstick tube had holes in it, so the water leaked right through,” Phoebe admits. “I did it again and this time filled it up, covered it was saran wrap, flipped it upside down and froze it that way, that was a success.”

She recommends using the ice roller 15 minutes a day as part of your beauty routine.

“Before you ice roll, make sure you’re makeup-free and roll along your cheeks, temples, forehead and jawline. I’m most excited for the under-eye to reduce some puffiness there,” she says.

When you’re done, just rinse the ice roller with cold water, then put it back in the freezer.
