Have you ever looked at your dog and wondered, “Why don’t they make single-use plastic water bottles but for pets?” Probably not. And yet, a company called Waggin Water actually sells single-use plastic bowls of water for pets — which, naturally, many people are upset about.
On March 2, TikTok account Waste-Ed, which educates users on how to live a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle, made a video about the “wasteful” product after they came across it in Target.
“They’re selling water for dogs in a plastic container,” the account explained. “And it seems pretty wack ’till you realize it’s the dog version of bottled water. But how has it even come to this?”

Waste-Ed’s video, which has received more than 83,000 likes, provoked ire from activists and pet owners alike.
“Welcome to capitalism,” one user said.
“Our earth is doomed,” another added.
Some users, however, defended the product, noting that it can be useful in an emergency and for people who don’t have access to clean drinking water.
“I’m not really defending it but I have been out and needed some water for my dog and definitely wished this was around,” one pet owner said.
“That would actually be super useful for donating to the homeless population who have animals,” another noted.
“It’s supposed to be for emergencies,” a third added. “Like if your car breaks down with them with you and it’s super hot.”
According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, single-use plastics break down into microplastics and endanger wildlife. Waggin Water notes it is “plastic neutral” since it donates some of its proceeds toward the collect of plastic wastes and makes its dog bowls out of plastic waste collected from oceans and landfills, but studies have shown that as much as 91 percent of plastic isn’t properly recycled. In other words, chances are that most of Waggin Water’s customers aren’t actually recycling their single-use bowls like they’re supposed to, which means they’re likely ending up back in the landfills and oceans where they were first collected from.
