Before I had kids, I assumed that motherhood was going to be all about making sacrifices. I figured I’d have to give up alone time, hide aspects of my true personality and say adiós to my beloved ’90s R&B. After London was born, I realized that this is totally not true. Sure, as a parent you will probably have less time for yourself and always have to consider the needs of your kiddos, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing your own passions, fading into the background or becoming a shell of who you once were.

And hear me out: it definitely doesn’t mean sacrificing your personal style.

I’m a huge advocate for all of the “ands” of motherhood. I think you should be able to be a mother and an entrepreneur, a mother who listens to “Baby Shark” with her kids and embraces her obsession with ’90s R&B and, of course, a mother and a fashionista.

Being somebody’s mom doesn’t mean that you have to suddenly adhere to a new code of ethics or dress code. Instead, the best thing you can do is express yourself and set an example of authenticity for your children to follow. Today, I wanted to share a few of my favorite fashion staples for mom-on-duty looks, because sure, parenting is a full-time job, but it’s much more fun if you do it in style. And you know what else? You deserve to do it in style.

Levi’s Wedgie Fit Jeans

I’m a denim enthusiast through and through — so much so that I got married in jeans! I have to say that Levi’s wedgie-fit jeans are my denim soulmates. Any time I’m not sure what to wear or need to get out the door quickly, I throw on these high-waisted jeans, which lengthen your legs and have an instant weekend-chic vibe. I love the way they look with a tucked-in tee, blazer and sneakers. You can also dress them up with strappy heels, a bodysuit and jewelry for date night.

Oversized Blazers

If you want to take an outfit from meh to heck yeah, throw on an oversized blazer. It’s amazing how versatile they turn out to be! An oversized blazer can elevate your look so easily — whether you pair it with a midi skirt and a tee, denim and heels, a sundress or even a sweatsuit. This is an essential for chic moms far and wide.

Maxi Dresses

Whether you’re running errands, taking the kids to the park or heading out for a family outing in the city, a maxi dress is minimum fuss for maxi style. I love a tiered or billowing version in a solid color like this one from Bassike. All you have to do is throw on a jacket, some sandals and a pair of earrings, and voilà! You’re comfortable and ready to step out on the scene looking like a dime piece.

Midi Skirts

What I love about midi skirts is that they can work for any occasion. You can pair them with a tank top and strappy sandals for a Charlotte from Sex And The City type look. Just as easily, though, you could tuck in a graphic tee and throw on some sneakers to nail the mom-on-the-go street style aesthetic. I like the silky versions that come in solid colors, but a pleated midi is also quite versatile. These are great to have in your wardrobe as they work in spring, summer and fall!

Trench Coat

A trench coat is one of those items that simply will never go out of style, and it’s worth investing in. Perfect for spring and fall, you can throw a trench over denim, dresses or even shorts and a blouse, and boom! You’ve got a look. I’m an outerwear enthusiast, and the trench is an MVP in my closet.

Oversized White Blouse

A white blouse is another piece that you’ll wear, re-wear and wear again. Right now, a slightly oversized silhouette is in vogue because you can wear it tucked into a skirt or pair of trousers, or layer it over a tank or bodysuit and wear it open like a jacket. I’ve even played with how I button it up and worn it slightly off the shoulder. It’s a piece you’ll reach for often when you don’t know how to style the rest of your look, and it always offers an air of elegance.

Knee Boots

Another must-have wardrobe staple, a pair of knee boots works for spring, fall and winter. I’d recommend a version with a chunky heel that isn’t too high so that you can usher the kids hither and thither in comfort. Knee boots automatically upgrade your outfit and give you that classy look (as long as you don’t wear them with Daisy Duke shorts). I love the way they look with midi dresses or skirts.

Dad Sneakers

It sounds counterintuitive, I know — dad sneakers for moms on duty? The chunky sneaker fad appears to be here to stay, and I’m praying it does because you can pair them with anything these days — from a suit to a silky midi dress — and the contrast works in your favor. Every mom simply needs a pair of dad sneakers. They’re comfortable, cute and make chasing your kids down an absolute breeze.

Cross-Body Bags

A cross-body bag is your godsend when you’ve got little ones in tow. Moms on duty usually need both of their hands, and luckily there are plenty of bags that liberate you while adding a fashion factor to your ensemble. I love a cross-body in a neutral color and saddle bag shape, or if you’re the bold type, a bright hue like red or yellow will stop traffic so that you and your kids can cross the street safely.

Cat-Eye Sunglasses

Trust me mommas, a pair of sunglasses gives you an air of having-it-together-ness, even when the house, your hair or life in general is a mess. I’m rarely spotted in “the wild” without a pair of sunnies because I always feel more sophisticated when I have them on. I especially love the cat-eye silhouette because they’re a classic style with a hint of cheekiness to them. I recently bought this pair by Bottega Veneta, and I’m obsessed.
