A FedEx driver delivered a little bit of unexpected joy when he shoveled off the stoop of a customer who inadvertently captured the kind gesture on their security camera.
Jodi Brooks LaFreniere, a kindergarten teacher in Manistique, Mich., received a notification from her Ring doorbell security system on Jan. 23, alerting her that someone was at her door, WCTV reports.
Upon checking out the scene being recorded by the device, LaFreniere saw FedEx employee Melvin Marlett shoveling a thick layer of snow from her stoop before dropping off a rather large package outside her home.
The teacher was touched by the gesture and took to Facebook to share a clip of Marlett’s deed.
“I shared it with my coworkers immediately because I couldn’t believe it,” she told CNN. “It made my day.”
The video quickly went viral, racking up more than 70,000 views and more than 460 shares — including one from FedEx, which posted the clip on its own Facebook page, writing, “there’s snow place like home.”
Dozens of people flocked to the comments to applaud Marlett, with some even sharing their own FedEx experiences.
“The FedEx guys who make deliveries at my work are basically the best humans in existence,” one customer wrote. “They are always so kind and one of them even learned my name on the FIRST day we met and calls me by name every single time.”
“That is going above and beyond,” added another. “Way to go.”
Marlett, a 23-year FedEx veteran who was later put in contact with LaFreniere through a mutual friend who saw the video on Facebook, said that despite any praise he’s received, he still considers his actions to be nothing out of the ordinary.
“I would hope it’s something that anybody would have done,” he told CNN. “If you take care of your customers, they take care of you.”
