Are fried grasshoppers actually delicious?

To American eaters, the idea of eating bugs might seem a little scary, but in plenty of cultures, it’s an everyday occurrence.

From Mexico to China to Uganda, chefs everywhere love preparing these tiny insects. They’re crunchy, easy to flavor, high in protein and much more sustainable than meat.

Also, crucially, they’re extremely easy to prepare. Some recipes for fried grasshoppers only use three ingredients and take just 10 minutes to make.

So are grasshoppers really the ultimate lunchtime snack? To find out, In The Know producer Poppy Shen gave them a try. To see how it went, watch the video above or keep reading below.

How to make fried grasshoppers at home

To start, all you need are three simple ingredients:

  • 6 cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup of chapulines (jarred grasshoppers)

For our grasshoppers, we used chapulines, which are a Mexican staple. That said, you can use grasshoppers of any kind from your local Hispanic grocery store, or anywhere else that sells rare and international foods.

To start, melt the butter in a pan over medium heat, then add the garlic and let it sauté for 30 to 45 seconds.

Next, add the grasshoppers, cook for about 10 minutes, and you’re ready to eat! It’s that easy.

When it came to the taste test, Poppy loved these things. She acknowledged that everyone might not be as adventurous of an eater, but for those who can stomach trying it, these are a delicious, high-protein way to mix things up in your diet.
